I read this book a long time ago. Then I got a yen for it and found it on Kindle which I love. So this is kinda like a space opera but not really. In a space opera the main characters are usually the big movers and shakers in this story the hero's are more like small players that help the big picture. Wow that does not sound like winning endorsment. Hopefully the rest of this review will be better.Good
1: The characters are well developed and fun. Bounty Hunter Sam McCade is your hard boiled hero. Tough, smart and deadly he is fun to ride along with. He is easy to understand and you instantly like him. Life has screwed him over but he just gets back up and keeps on trucking. No angst. No drama just an understanding that life isn't fair and is never going to be so get up and put your big boy pants on.
2: The world the author creates is simple but works well. You get some of the history enough to understand but not a info dump. I like that as it is a delicate balancing act to let people into your world but no overwhelm them.
3: This is action oriented so be prepared. I found all the action scenes to be fun a few were cheesy but most were realistic enough that I didn't put the book down and say "Really?". So if you like action this will be a good fit for you.
Bad
1: It does get kind repttitive as some of the same things happen over and over. You know the standard plot elements betrayal, kidnapping those things.
2: The ending is...well it sucks. Sorry but that is what it is.
Overall
So why read a book with a crappy ending? Good question. Because the book is fun and enjoyable there is only one point at the end that I disagreed with it made the hero seem like a bit player and that just rubbed me wrong. But everything up to that point was a hell of a lot of fun. So this would be for the reader who likes bounty hunters, pirates, improbable love interests and just is looking for a fun book to read. If you are looking for a romance this is not for you, it does have that but it plays a secondary role to the plot. This is not for those who want psychic powers. God abilities or a character who is never wrong.

Galactic Bounty Sam McCade Book 1 eBook William C Dietz Reviews
Kept my interest and I was ready to read book 2.
Love the Mccade Series! A new twist on the bounty hunter theme in space. Dietz is at his best in this earlier work.
Dietz is a favorite in this sci-fi genre. Here, Dietz tells the tale of a street smart, galactic bounty hunter all wrapped around the axle in a complex set of half-truths and betrayals. This Dietz is from early in his writing career. Nonetheless, the story here is excellent. Dietz narrative style has greatly improved with experience and his ability to write an all-nighter read has been consistent.
Pulp adventures in space, enjoyable but forgettable.
Absolutely fast paced fun. I might read it again. The action sequences are well drawn and easy to visualize. I might criticize Dietz's plot line getting just a tad thin and unbelieveable toward the end, but because the pace of the book is so fast, most readers won't mind. And seriously, this does have some cool plot twists. If anyone is looking for more complicated or serious plot twists, a SciFi action thriller of two hundred pages probably isn't the place for that.
But, if you were looking for a fast paced thriller, this is the book.
The idea is interesting the far-ranging human Empire uses bounty hunters because it is cheaper and more efficient than a police force. However, the characters are cardboard cliches, and the plot, except for occasional flashes, reads like something from 1950s SF. I can't in good conscience recommend the book or the rest of the series. Too bad, because Dietz has written some quite good stuff, including his milSF series "Legion of the Damned." On the other hand, he sometimes seems to be a lazy writer, pumping out formula, as here and in his latest "Andromeda" series.
this is an interesting book, it starts off as closely to the theme of a bounty hunter as you'd expect and then branches into a wider universe. its a fun exploration of a universe but can be long winded at times. one of the casualties of books such as this is the over explanation of tech that has been blathered on about in pop culture for literally years and being a book published after the saturation it is noticeably redundant.
the ending was a bit sudden for my tastes as some of the rest of the authors titles seem to be. thankfully they bleed into each other and hopefully by the end of the series the plot will build up to a crescendo that justifies some of the endings.
I recommend giving this book a read if you are a sci-fi fan and plan on reading the rest of the series. if you get to the end and feel a discouraged just consider it the first part of a larger book and reading the 2nd 3rd and so on books will be more fulfilling.
